Weaving

To be weaving this length approx 3 metres long and 10cm wide. I have used 100% wool, for both warp and weft. The weft is made up of single or 2 or 3 threads and the lifting order is a 2/2 twill (12,23,34,41) which has created some interesting outcomes. 

The fabric feels firm on the loom but I am looking forward to seeing how the handle is once off the loom. I had sett it quite close as I wanted to bring out the firmness of the yarn.

The contrasting from the two reds with the white single thread I am hoping will look ok.

LIGHT AND VIDEO

 

I have made using what I recall as an amazing technology in its day - not that long ago, 20 years approx, it has gone from the tv to myself making Video into wall hangings, abstract baskets to weaving as a weft and sometime in the future warp to express my fascination for some years.

 It started with this dress which a friend kindly modelled for myself and I even received a prize for flamboyant fantasy some years ago..

Opening - Moments Studio

Here is the repairing of the studio after two trees fell onto it last year. Much work to be done at the time of taking picture. But will be fixed and feeling much happier as time goes on. I will need to look at paint colours for the door and windows, but the inside is tradition gallery white.

 Weavings and wall hangings along with glass fused pieces that is made by us. As we are always looking to putting an expression of what impacts on us - in the beauty of life - into our pieces.

The making is always happening. Ideas seem to be around all the time, it is what can I do or how or who is this piece being made for.

Yet the main part for me is I Make For It Is Part of ME.

Swirly Basket

The Swirly Basket using wool and cord core. Shape that showed movement and gave the greyness of the yarn more texture than 2-D in other forms.

Splash of Yellow

 

This is where I have used a splash of yellow yarn to give a splash of difference. I used landscape dyes to colour. I had done some solid dyed yarn for a present, this is what I did with the dye left to see if my other idea would work. Yes the dye idea worked. The pieces are to be wet finished.

Reflective Shape

The showing of the reflective tape yarn hanging at LOT 19 for the recent Sculpture exhibition. The first few images show insitu while the last is it reflecting.

To shape a piece of weaving after it is woven, or to cut up is always a interesting for me as one who likes to multi use a piece I have made which is straight length.

Dyed Idea

This set of pictures is the process of two making for one.
We dyed the yarn.
Warp is wound.
Then looked at.
Woven by two and finished.
Then delivered and now the if part of will the recipient wear it.
But then we realised no finished picture oh well that happens in life.


Remembered I do have samples which is lovely.

1st Workshop Weaving with Natural Materials

These are some of the pieces I have made and show how they can be either a brooch or magnet. The workshop was two 1 hour sessions in a beautiful Art deco building in Richmond, Victoria. Which I feel added to the experience, as it was light filled (skylights) and how the building had been modernised. This is my idea of using nature in weaving, along with 4 selvage method of warping and weaving. This allows for an other styles of brooches.

Bark, twigs, firm grass's, leaves and flowers have been used, with awareness of the flower may breakdown sooner. The people at the workshop came away with the one they made and seemed happy. A fun project to do, with the people from (EEEC) Sharing the Journey conference. Thank you all who participated in the day and my two helpers.

1st Window Display

This is my first go at a window display and I enjoyed the process, seeing my weaving and yarns that I use on display for people to see. While this happened during the wool and sheep show earlier this year it is something I am very proud to have done.

Collection of Winter Warmer

 

The three weavings of throw lengths and trialing out the size tags has come to an end. Yes I am still using the size tags - I measure and put small price tags in at 20cm lengths until I have reach the loom length required. I have woven and sold this weaving which is very encouraging.

To now be on the final section of weaving has meant I will consider all the different ideas that I have trialled - uneven hems/fringes, combining yarns, vibrant colours, slightly different lengths are a few. I like all of them and are very happy with what I have woven.

Weavings from a Rigid Heddle Loom

I recently received a gift of a rigid heddle loom and I have woven these two items on it whilst being away from home. This orange cotton and viscose was the first and it took a little to warp up as I was blending a couple of ideas on ways to warp up. But I wove this at the local artist market where I have a stall. It was a very winters day and weaving away gave both my hands and mind something to do that didn't involve the cold. I have tried a rough version of hand Leno at different points to see how the loom handled it.

A very happy piece and I was soon back at the rigid loom with more ideas abound for the future. For now I am trying a combined colour warp and another threading method after watching a few ytube video's. I found a slightly quicker way and was soon weaving away.

The way to yarns interact is something I find fun and are happy exploring, along with how different plys with different colours make for a rich textile piece wether that is light or heavy in both yarn and or colour.

Winter warmers

I have been weaving three throws - wraps using some yarn that I have had for a few years and until recently I was unsure what to or how to use in weaving. Then I came across another yarn and ping went in my mind, these two can go together and even though they will create differnt width in the reed, they lend to  be woven clasp weft with the introducing of angora, alpaca and wool in some of them, so with this sorted I started.

This is the first one just off the loom with my new idea for measuring, little tags with the length it measured from the last tag eg 120cm plus 20cm = 140cm under loom tension. There is wool and alpaca in this one and a new happpy owner who fell for the weaving when I was doing some bark weaving workshop with school children recently.

Number two from the same warp this time a darker green running up the middle and different edge finish shape. Yarns are wool, alpaca giving a nice touch.

This one has angora, wool and aplaca in it which is giving a nice feel to the weaving even at this stage. I have started the final one and are please the light blue works well, the red looks more red on the loom, but I will wait and see when weaving is finished.
