Moments are Out, Even is Uneven

 

I have been making since the end part of Dec 2013 on a number of small weavings that would in a moment create an image in my mind. It then moved to the small looms and 4 selvedge method of weaving Tapestry. Colour seemed to answer itself almost with myself viewing these two colours sitting comfortably together in a box, one soft the other stiff and man-made. 

To make is always a mixture of excitement and wonder how an idea comes to life and develops into the expression of emotion, thought and soul of both the materials and my response to them thus giving myself the encouragement to make.

I then came to finish the weaving when I realised that each piece was not yet complete, the sense of a completed work was when they were on their backgrounds which gave the weavings a place to call home.

These works are being shown as my solo exhibition and I am pleased how they have come together as both a body of work and individual pieces.



1st Workshop Weaving with Natural Materials

These are some of the pieces I have made and show how they can be either a brooch or magnet. The workshop was two 1 hour sessions in a beautiful Art deco building in Richmond, Victoria. Which I feel added to the experience, as it was light filled (skylights) and how the building had been modernised. This is my idea of using nature in weaving, along with 4 selvage method of warping and weaving. This allows for an other styles of brooches.

Bark, twigs, firm grass's, leaves and flowers have been used, with awareness of the flower may breakdown sooner. The people at the workshop came away with the one they made and seemed happy. A fun project to do, with the people from (EEEC) Sharing the Journey conference. Thank you all who participated in the day and my two helpers.

Taradale Arts Show

I am one of three who will have their work made into postcards for the 150th Viaduct celebrations in October 2012, which came from winning a judged Taradale Arts show which was on over the long weekend of March (labor day). I have woven three tapestries with two being of yarn and one bark and yarn. I looked at the Viaduct at different lights and decided the evening with a lovely golden sun(we have a history of mining here) showing in shadow our very large Viaduct for a small town.

I congratulate the two works and their makers and look forward to seeing all three postcards in due time.

Tapestry - Texture



I am meant to hang length ways with red at the top, but not able to at present.



Red wool and knitting plastic clear / sparkly are what I used in this hanging.

The blending from red to clear was part of my idea and if it had been rectangle

that would be the result. But shape is part of the piece. 





The two differing textures is interesting for me.


This is a piece that seemed to just come about when I put on a warp. I decided to do different lengths, angles for the edges in three sections. I used the method of four selvages method which I find I'm getting better at finishing edges. The act of tapestry weaving gives myself time to explore shape and texture along with experimenting on ideas (some seem strange, but always what about this or could I use that) on many levels. It also brings out enjoyment of making by the way Tapestry is a longer process.

Exhibition Time

Welcome to my body of work in the Fuse exhibition at the Counihan gallery and is open till the 18th December 2010.

The works seen here are photographed by Stephen using my little camera at the opening of the Fuse 2010 graduation exhibition, the course I have been fulfilling, now called Textile design and development at RMIT, Brunswick Melbourne at the Counihan Gallery.

The pieces that has been selected to be part of the Fuse exhibition are a length of tapestry with different technique’s of weave that are in the shape of box’s and to go with this is 14 free standing box’s made in tapestry, felt, weave, glass with plastic, machine knitting technique’s.

It was a wonderful night of viewing works that I had heard and seen some works in progress. To then see them finished, selected by the gallery curator which made decisions on what they saw as a body of works both collectively and individually. There were many to catch up with from previous and future students and teachers, then seeing that my work was in the (what I'll call) the cube, was amazing to go through.

I have not included others work as felt I should allow for them to express their own views of the final school exhibition.

I am very happy with the whole experience for I have gained a lot and look forward to more times where my work is exhibited.
